J. Hull, assistant to the president and secretary of the College
and adjunct assistant professor of French, has accepted the position
of headmistress of a school the New York Times describes as "one
of the nation's most esteemed private schools for girls."
She will be the first African American to lead New York's
Brearley School, which has 670 students from kindergarten to twelfth
grade. Hull will begin her new position as the 118-year-old school's
fourteenth head in July.
Hull, who has long
cherished the dream of working in educational administration in
a school for young students, was attracted to the position by
Brearley's mission, educating girls for a democratic society.
She also looks forward to living in an urban environment and pursuing
interests in urban architecture, cinema, and art, she said. Hull
credits her time working with President Joanne V. Creighton with
giving her an appreciation for strategic planning. "I will
take with me all I have learned about creating and implementing
a plan, the importance of having one, and sticking to it, despite
any challenges that arise," she said. Hull assumed her position
at MHC in 1998.
"Stephanie is
a wonderful friend, colleague, and administrator who has played
a major role in moving Mount Holyoke College forward over the
past five years," says Creighton, who offered high praise
for Hull. "Stephanie knows how to bring people together and
get things done. All members of our communitystudents, faculty,
trustees, alumnae, staff, and administratorshave benefited
from Stephanie's effective and hardworking commitment to
educating women leaders. I'm sure that her experience here
has prepared her well for her important post at Brearley. I would
also note that Stephanie is one of the most serene people I know:
balanced, calm, capable, ready to laugh, perceptive, open, articulate,
intelligent. She works incredibly hard, but she is never rattled:
she always keeps perspective and looks after herself. She's
an equestrian, a Rollerblader, an accomplished seamstress, a voracious
reader, a seasoned traveler, a committed researcher, a popular
teacher, as well as a very effective administrator."
Hull, who earned master's
and doctoral degrees in French literature from Harvard University
and has taught French courses at Wellesley College (her undergraduate
alma mater), Harvard, and Dartmouth, came to MHC from Dartmouth,
where she was an administrator and faculty member.
