Michelle Stephens Wins NEH Award

May 2002

Michelle Stephens, assistant professor of American Studies and English, has been awarded a summer stipend by the National Endowment for the Humanities for her project, Transnational Sensibility and Caribbean Intellectuals in the Early Twentieth Century. Professor Stephens studies the writings of three black transnational intellectuals, Marcus Garvey, Claude McKay, and C. L. R. James, and their novel conceptions of both black identity and American nationality. An extremely popular teacher, Stephens often teaches the Introduction to American Studies. Her most recent focus for that course was "Migrations, Borders, Myths".
