The Ancient Studies Major
The major requires a minimum of 32 credits, including at least one intermediate-level course in Greek or Latin, or Asian Studies 142, Elementary Sanskrit. Courses may be selected from offerings in classics, art history, history, Asian studies, philosophy, politics, and religion, in consultation with the student’s advisor.
Students who major in ancient studies choose from among three concentrations: art historical/archaeological, historical, or literary/mythological. The aim of the concentrations is to balance the breadth of the major with depth and to provide coherence.
Because only 32 credits are required, ancient studies majors must also have another major, minor, or certificate to complete degree requirements. Minoring in religion, art history, an ancient language, philosophy, or religion complements ancient studies well by deepening a student's expertise in one discipline.
The Ancient Studies Minor
The minor requires a minimum of 20 credits, including courses from two different areas of concentration, at least one 300-level course, and relevant courses in classics, art history, history, Asian studies, philosophy, politics, and religion.
For detailed requirements for the major and minor, see the Ancient Studies chapter of the course catalogue.
