Arts Community
At Mount Holyoke, the arts are an essential part of our liberal arts curriculum. Working closely with nationally recognized arts professionals and scholars, Mount Holyoke students develop their creative talents while learning to think and read critically, and to speak and write well—abilities that make them successful throughout their lives.
Whether you sing, paint, dance, act, write poetry, or enjoy going to plays, concerts, films, and art exhibitions, there's a place in the Mount Holyoke arts community for you.
Art Museum
The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is one of the oldest teaching museums in the country. Its comprehensive permanent collection of more than 14,000 objects supports classes in all eras of art history. The museum also presents critically acclaimed exhibitions of challenging, provocative work by contemporary artists.
Arts Committee
Each year the Arts Committee organizes the Leading Women in the Arts series in collaboration with the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts. The series brings to campus well-known performing and visual artists who discuss and show their work, present workshops, and meet with students in small seminars.
The 2010 guest artist was Finnish conductor and composer Kaija Saariaho. Other recent artists have included Jeannine Oppewall (Academy Award-nominated production designer, 2009), Rachel Rosenthal (performer and theatre director, 2008), Ann Hamilton (visual artist, 2007), and Trisha Brown (dancer and choreographer, 2006).
The Arts Committee is made up of chairs and/or representatives of all of the arts departments and programs at Mount Holyoke, Art Museum staff, and students. It meets monthly to keep members informed about campus arts activities and to discuss opportunities for collaboration.
