The Chinese program at Mount Holyoke College is a strong
and fast growing program that offers four levels of Chinese language
courses (elementary, intermediate, 3 rd year, and 4 th year Chinese)
and several Chinese literature courses. The literature courses include
two 200 level courses, Women in Chinese Literature and Contemporary Chinese
Fiction, and a 300 level seminar on the famous eighteenth-century novel
The Story of the Stone . Several cross-listed faculty members in this
program also teach a variety of subjects on China, including history,
politics, economics, and arts. Those who are interested in China or East
Asia will be able to find many interesting courses to take at MHC (for
details, please see the Courses page and Asian Studies Program website).
Since 2005, with the support of the college administration and the Center
for Global Initiatives, the MHC Chinese program has fostered a close
academic collaboration with Beijing Language and Culture University,
one of the most prestigious universities in China in the field of Teaching
Chinese as a Foreign Language. Currently, two projects, a summer immersion
language program for MHC students and a faculty exchange program, are
successfully co-run by MHC and BLCU. The MHC-BLCU summer language program
is not only tailored to the needs of MHC students, but is also integrated
into the MHC Chinese curriculum. The faculty exchange program offers
an invaluable opportunity for teaching and research cooperation to faculty
from both institutions (for details, please see Study Abroad page and
the Center for Global Initiatives website).
In addition to study abroad, the MHC Chinese program also tries to help
its students find internships in China and to provide advising in their
search for temporary jobs in China after graduation (for details, please
see Intern Abroad and the Center for Global Initiatives website).
The MHC Chinese program is a member of the Five College East Asian Language
Program. The EALP provides consortium consultant and financial support
for the curricular and extra-curricular needs of its members.
