Karen Frost
Class of 2008,
Arabic Language Fellow
I am an Asian Studies and International Relations double major at
Mount
Holyoke.
I started taking Arabic my first year at Mount Holyoke because I wanted
to take something different in college (I went to a French immersion
elementary school and learned Spanish in high school. I spent my junior
year abroad at the University of Jordan with the CIEE program in order
to increase my fluency and to learn more about my host culture. It was
a great learning experience.
Three years ago I took a student-led J-term class about Bollywood movies
that sparked my interest in South Asia. Since then, in my free time I’ve
taken Hindi, Urdu, and Bangla. I spent the past two summers in Bangladesh
as part of the State Department’s Critical Languages Scholarship
program. Next year, I will be attending the University of Wisconsin,
Madison in the Languages and Cultures of Asia program pursuant to a Master’s
degree in South Asia. Even though Arabic and the Middle East aren’t
in my immediate plans, I may well find a reason to renew my interest
later on for Arabic, a highly useful language.
I have learned a lot of new things in my time at Mount Holyoke and been
involved academically in my departments. This year I am taking Russian
and Italian, but
I am also an International Relations department liaison and, during this spring
semester, an Arabic Language Fellow. I am writing my thesis in the International
Relations department about the civil war aspects of the Judaean War in AD 66.
Outside of academics, I have been very involved in sports at Mount Holyoke. This
year I was the captain of the varsity soccer team, and I have been a member of
the ice hockey and fencing teams since freshman year. I also rode for a semester
on our nationally-recognized club dressage team.
