The Asian Studies Major

The Asian Studies Program includes the Middle East, East Asia, and South Asia. The major in Asian studies is interdisciplinary; courses must be taken not only in Asian studies but also in other departments such as anthropology, art history, economics, English, film studies, gender studies, geography, history, international relations, philosophy, politics, and religion. Asian studies students are encouraged to design a coherent and individualized program focused on a particular language and area of Asia and to become conversant with the tools and methodologies of a specific discipline in the humanities or social sciences, such as history, politics, or literature. Please consult the checklist for requirements that will aid you in designing your program.

The study of an Asian language lies at the core of the major. We currently offer instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Sanskrit. The study of other Asian languages is possible through the Five College Consortium.

See the Asian Studies chapter of the catalogue for detailed information on requirements for the major.
