How to access a molecule from any computer (example in L2)

  • In the main window, open the molecule you wish to show in lecture.
  • Select Export under the file menu.
  • Click on the PDB file type, and name your file.

  • Right now or remember the name of the computer you were on, since accounts are not on the mhc server yet.

This will allow you to open the molecule in the program RasMol, which is smaller and easier to run on the Mac in L2. Currently the printing from the SGIs is not set up on all of them, so it is easier to print from RasMol. Before I go into the instructions getting the file onto the computer in L2, we need to logout of the SGI.

    Logging Out

  • Close Spartan by selecting quit under the file menu.
  • On the SGI desktop, in the Toolchest, select Log Out on the bottom of the Desktop menu.

    On the Mac in L2

  • Open Fetch from the Launcher
  • Under the File menu, select New Connection
  • On the host line type: computername.chem.mtholyoke.edu
  • On the UserId line type: your user name
  • On the password line type: your password

  • Click on OK.
  • Find the PDB file and select it.
  • Make sure the Automatic button is selected.
  • Click on Get File
  • Choose to save the file on the Desktop by clicking on the Desktop Button
  • Click on OK
The file should now be on your desktop
  • Open RasMol
Note: If RasMol is not on your computer see How to access RasMol from any mac... or How to access RasMol from any PC...
  • In open
  • Choose to open your file
  • Now you should see your molecule in RasMol
  • To manipulate your molecule see the RasMol Tutorial for commands. (http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~emlaughl/rasmol/raspro.htm)
