Major and Minor Requirements
This
major encourages the study of ancient civilizations from an interdisciplinary
and inclusive perspective. Through courses in art history, language,
literature, philosophy, and religion, students will attain a deeper
and more sophisticated knowledge of the history of the ancient
world. Ancient Studies majors will also have the opportunity to
use those tools that have placed the study of antiquity at the
forefront of computer-based research and education (e.g. Perseus
and the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and Packard Humanities Institute
cd-roms).
Requirements:
A major will choose from among five concentrations: Greek Studies,
Roman Studies, Art of the Ancient Mediterranean, Ancient History
or Comparative Myth and Epic: Ancient India. Majors must earn a
minimum of 32 credits (including 12 at the 300-level). Each major
will be required to complete the following three courses which
provide the necessary foundation for more advanced study: (1) Greek
221, Latin 221 or L142 (Elementary Sanskrit II); (2) History 120, "The
History of Ancient Greece and Rome"; and (3) Clas/Art 110, "Gods
and Mortals: Myth in Ancient Art and Literature." In addition,
each major will be required to complete at least one course outside
her area of concentration treating any area of study in the ancient
world (including Judaic studies or Near Eastern studies) in order
to provide her with a broader, interdisciplinary perspective. On
consultation with her adviser each student may choose her remaining
courses from among those offered in classics, art history, ancient
history, Indian studies, ancient philosophy, and religion.
The Major: (32 credits total)
- History 120: "The History of Ancient Greece and Rome." (4
credits)
- Clas/Art 110: "Gods and Mortals: Myth in Ancient Art and
Literature" (4 credits)
- Greek 221 or Latin 221* (4 credits)
- Three 300-level courses within the concentration (including
advanced language courses, seminars, independent study). (12
credits)
- Two courses at the 200-level or above (one of which must be
outside the concentration) (8 credits)
*For the "Comparative Myth and Epic: Ancient India" concentration
a student may substitute Elementary Sanskrit II (L142) for Greek
221 or Latin 221. In this case she will be required to take at
least two courses in Indian Studies (at least one of which must
be at the 300-level). The remaining three courses (at least two
of which must be at the 300-level) can be selected from among those
offered in classics, art history, ancient history, ancient philosophy
and religion.
