Classics (CLASS, GREEK, LATIN)

The discipline of classics comprises the study of the language, literature, history, culture, and society of the Greeks and Romans and of the ancient Mediterranean world from about the eighth century BCE (BC) to the fifth century of our own era (c. 476 CE). Courses taught by members of the classics department fall into two categories, those whose readings are entirely in English (e.g., Classics 106f, Classics 220f), and those that require the study of an ancient language (e.g., Greek 101, Latin 201).

Greek and Latin are great ways to meet your language requirement. "Dead languages," you say? Hardly. English is filled with Latinate words, and Greek is the basis of most scientific terminology. Moreover, as long as people read Homer, Plato, Greek tragedy, the New Testament, Virgil, Ovid, and Tacitus, to mention just some of the greatest hits in Greek and Latin, these ancient languages remain very much alive. They are also required for a variety of advanced academic degrees.

For students entering in the spring, if you have no previous knowledge of Greek or Latin, you will need to enroll in Greek 101 or Latin 101 in the fall. If, however, you have had three years or more of high school Latin, you should take the diagnostic exam (see the link for "Language Exams and Questionnaires") so that we can determine an appropriate Latin course for you. If you have had some Latin, but fewer than three years, please consult the chair, since you may be able to enroll in Latin 102.

In order to take a Latin exemption exam, a student must first take the diagnostic exam.

Please direct your questions to Professor Paula Debnar, chair.
