Credit Transfer

Questions about Credit Transfer
Many first-year students arrive at Mount Holyoke having successfully completed work on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and A-level (and other international) examinations, as well as through college course work completed while in high school.

Mount Holyoke welcomes such advanced preparation and, in many cases, awards credit for advanced work. All students must complete 128 academic credits to graduate from Mount Holyoke. At least 64 of these credits must be earned at Mount Holyoke or through the Five College interchange.

Please consult the registrar's transfer credit information for more specifics than are detailed here.

Transfer Credit
If you have taken college-level courses, wish to transfer credits, and have not already submitted official transcripts including that work during the admission process, please have the registrar at the school you attended send an official transcript to the Office of the Registrar, 50 College Street, South Hadley, MA 01075-1498. Once the transcript has been processed, you will receive an email notification that your record has been updated and can check your unofficial transcript in ISIS to see the transferred credit.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
Mount Holyoke participates in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Mount Holyoke awards 4 college credits for most AP scores of 4 or 5. AP credit will not satisfy any distribution or language requirement at Mount Holyoke, but it may qualify you to skip some pre-requisites and enter a more advanced course in that subject at Mount Holyoke.  Questions about skipping pre-requisites should be addressed to the course instructor or department Chair; questions about AP credit should be addressed to the registrar's office.

Credit for A-Level Exams, the International Baccalaureate, and Other International Exams
Students who successfully complete A-Level Exams, the International Baccalaureate, the Abitur, or similar examinations may be granted college credit. For example, 8 credits are awarded per A-level exam in a liberal arts subject where the grade was C or better; up to 32 credits are awarded for the International Baccalaureate diploma if the score was 36 or higher, all grades were 6 or 7, and at least 3 "higher level" exams were taken.  For a more complete description of specific policies on Advanced Placement credit, see the registrar's transfer credit information."

Credit earned from A-levels, the IB, and other international exams will not satisfy any distribution or language requirement at Mount Holyoke, but it may qualify you to skip some pre-requisites and enter a more advanced course in that subject at Mount Holyoke.  Questions about skipping pre-requisites should be addressed to the course instructor or department Chair.

If you have taken international exams, bring the original documentation of your results with you to the College.  You should discuss your results with your advisor during orientation, and then visit the registrar's office later in your first month the Registrar will make copies of your documents to credit your record.

Summer Study
If you have taken summer courses at an accredited college or university before your arrival at Mount Holyoke or take them between your years at Mount Holyoke, you can usually receive transfer credit from Mount Holyoke for any liberal arts courses. An official transcript from the institution where you took the courses must be sent directly to the registrar. No courses taught online will be awarded credit, or will coures with final grades lower than C-.

Within the overall limits for transferred credit, the limit for summer transfer is eight credits total over your years at Mount Holyoke.  However, first-year students who enter in January may have a higher limit (16), depending on how many credits were transferred from the fall before their arrival at Mount Holyoke.
