Curriculum Vitae
Born 1938, Study of Economics and Sociology at the University of Munich, Germany. Post-Graduate study of Eastern European economics, politics and law. Doctoral Thesis 1968 on "Social Production and Economic Rationality - External Effects and Central Planning in the Socialist Economic System" (published by Europäische Verlagsanstalt Frankfurt/Wien 1969). From 1968 to 1970 Research Assistant at the Center for Social Research, University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Since 1970 University-Professor (tenure position) at the Free University Berlin, department of Political Science (Otto-Suhr-Institut). In 1984, 1986, 1989, 1999 a guest-professor at the Universidade Federal do Pará in Belém, Brasil; in spring 1992 at the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (Unidades Xochimilco and Azcapotzalco) in Mexico City, 1988 at the New School for Social Research in New York, N.Y., at York University of Toronto, Canada, summer 1994, at the State University (UNESP) of Sao Paulo, Brasil, in spring 1996.
Main publications cover the fields of crisis theory, state theory, economic world system (especially financial crises, development strategies and processes of globalization) and of global ecological constraints and environmental policy. Research has also been performed on economic growth and social development in West Germany, on industrial relations and trade union strategies in Western Europe, on strategies of economic development in the Amazon and their ecological impact, on East European processes of transformation from a planned to a market economy, on ecological constraints of economic development, and on the „Limits of Globalization".
I am a co-editor of the social science quarterly "PROKLA", President of the Lelio Basso International Foundation for the Right of Peoples in Rome, member of the scientific council of the Institute of Socio-ecological Research in Frankfurt and of the Institute for ecological research in Berlin, co-director of a research unit on "Processes of transformation in an interdependent world", a "Vertrauensdozent" (trusted professor) of the "Hans Böckler Foundation", member of the Green Acadamy of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Berlin. Until January 1999 also Dean of the Department of Political Science at the Free University Berlin.
