Description: (dir. Leonard Retel Helmrich, Netherlands/Indonesia, 52 min, in Bahasan Indonesian w/ English subtitles) Banned at the Jakarta International Film Festival, award-winning director Helmrich's humorous yet provocative film follows Agus, a Muslim puppeteer and troubadour in his efforts to understand terrorism after the 2002 Bali bombings. Looking for answers, Agus seeks out a clairvoyant to speak with the dead bombers and visits a notorious terrorist ringleader in jail to challenge his intolerance. Film Festival: MadCat Women's International Film Festival -- “Private Eyes,” the first program in curator Ariella Ben-Dov’s series, features an eclectic selection of experimental documentaries and animated works from the UK, Czech Republic, Norway and the US. The Intimacy of Strangers, follows a clandestine film crew that prowls the streets, capturing phone conversations. The filmmaker “steals” these intimate moments and explores the ever-shrinking gap between private and public spheres. Deep Woods is a performative video that lures male participants through evocative advertisements. These innovative works reveal the power of modern technologies to upend of notions of privacy. Filmmaker Jenny Perlin, Mount Holyoke College/Five College Visiting Artist in Film Studies, presents her new book and short film. Perlin offers a journey through obssession and self-help - the historical and cultural cycle of hard work driven by the desire to succees, subsequent emotional collapse, and the use of self-help or medication, enabling the return to work. Her book and film are inspired by a 1915 best-seller, but the cycle continues today.
