History (HIST)

First-year students are invited to join any 100-level course in history listed below, all of which are designed to introduce students not only to a period or theme in history but also to the practice of historical analysis and interpretation. Although students should not rule out taking surveys at Mount Holyoke even if they have completed similarly titled courses in high school, those with backgrounds in history may also wish to consider 200-level courses. The instructor of a 200-level course will be glad to advise a student as to whether or not it would be appropriate to her interests and preparation. We remind all students that 100-level courses are introductory in character, but challenging in content and approach.
