Russian and Eurasian Studies (RES)
The Department of Russian and Eurasian Studies offers two majors, one in Russian language and culture, the other in Russian and Eurasian studies. The former emphasizes language and literature; the latter is more focused on politics and economics. Many of the major requirements in both Russian language and culture, and Russian and Eurasian studies overlap, and any of the courses you choose from our recommended list below can be counted for either major. Both majors require a minimum of two years of language, so if you are considering either of these majors, it would be a good idea to register for elementary Russian in the fall. We will offer Elementary Russian, a yearlong course, for 6 credits each semester. This course offers a comprehensive study of grammar and lots of opportunity to practice speaking skills. It is a great opportunity to start your Russian with a bang! We also offer first-year courses taught in English that are designed to introduce you to the rich culture and history of Russian and Eurasia. As you will see from the course descriptions, these courses are designed to introduce you to the department and to its focus of study. You can take our 4-credit introductory courses to give you a good idea of what we do. Please join us and learn about the rich cultural and political history of Russia and Eurasia, including the new states of Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe. A brochure describing the work of the department, faculty and course offerings in greater detail is available in 103 Ciruti or call x2648.
