Credit Transfer

Questions about Credit Transfer
Many first-year students arrive at Mount Holyoke having successfully completed work on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and A-level (and other international) examinations, as well as through college course work completed while in high school.

Mount Holyoke welcomes such advanced preparation and, in many cases, awards credit for advanced work. All students must complete 128 academic credits to graduate from Mount Holyoke. At least 64 of these credits must be earned at Mount Holyoke or through the Five College exchange.

Transfer Credit
If you have taken college-level courses and wish to transfer credits, please have the registrar at the school you attended send an official transcript to the Office of the Registrar, 50 College Street, South Hadley, MA 01075-1498. Once the transcript has been processed, you will receive a copy of your Mount Holyoke transcript showing credits transferred. Please direct any questions to Mount Holyoke's registrar.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
Mount Holyoke participates in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Mount Holyoke awards 4 college credits for most AP scores of 4 or 5. In foreign languages, AP credit may enable a student to enter a more advanced course, but the credit does not satisfy the language requirement. If you have questions about AP credit, consult the registrar.

Credit for A-Level Exams, the International Baccalaureate, and Other International Exams
Students who successfully complete A-Level Exams, the International Baccalaureate, the Abitur, or similar examinations may be granted college credit. For example, 8 credits are awarded for a single A-Level Exam with a grade of C or better for a maximum of 24 credits for three exams; 32 credits are awarded for the International Baccalaureate diploma earned with a score of 36 or higher.

These credits may be used for exemption from distribution requirements if approved by the relevant department. In English and foreign languages, these credits may—with the permission of the department—enable a student to enter more advanced Mount Holyoke courses and be applied toward distribution requirements.

Students should have their examination results sent directly to the Office of the Registrar by September. During Orientation, students will be advised of the probable course of action to be taken on their examinations.

Summer Study
If you have taken summer courses at an accredited college or university, you can usually receive credit for this work from Mount Holyoke. An official transcript from the institution where you took the courses must be sent directly to the registrar. First-year students who enter in February may earn up to 16 summer school credits, depending on the total number of other college credits earned before entering Mount Holyoke. The College will grant credit for most college work that you have already completed, providing the final course grade was the equivalent of C- or better. Ordinarily, credits are transferable for all liberal arts courses.
