Literature, History and Society in French Guiana

This lecture will examine the specifics of the literature of French Guiana analyzing both the close ties between literature and history in the Guianese context and the ways in which literature serves as a mirror of the culture of Guiana and its evolution.

Conquered by the French in the 16th century, French Guiana is more than a colony today: it is a department of France. And although its administrative, social and political fabric is European, its population is a rainbow of Amerindian, African, Asian, and European identities who, each year, come together at Carnival time to reveal their deep roots.
