DISTRIBUTION
DES PRIX
The Distribution des
prix is held annually at the end of the spring semester. This year
the event was held in Ham Hall living room on April 30, 2008 at
4:30 pm.
The following prizes
are awarded to students who have taken French during the current
academic year.
Francophone Book Prize - is awarded for excellence
in Francophone Studies.
Sylvia
Sherk Hubbell '39 Book Prize
- for excellence in French.
Foster Prize is awarded
to first year students who excel in their work in French. The prize
was established in 1944 by Hattie F. Moore and Warren W. Foster
in memory of their mother. (Candidate must not be of French lineage,
and not educated in a French-speaking country.)
Henry Gaviglio Prize - is awarded
to a student of merit for outstanding service to the life of the
French Department.
Hubbell
Junior Year Abroad Prize was established in 2001
from The Sylvia Sherk Hubbell '39 Memorial Fund to be awarded for
excellence in French. The award enables students of merit to pursue
cultural activities during the junior year abroad.
Patch Prize The Helen
E. Patch Prize was established in honor of Miss Patch, a former
faculty member and chairman of the department, by her students.
It is given annually for excellence in French.
Périvier Prize
The Jacques Henri Périvier Prize for outstanding work in
17th-century studies was established in 1993 in honor of Professor
Périvier, a former faculty member and chairman of the department
to be given annually to the student who does outstanding work in
the production or performance of a French play or an outstanding
research project in French literature (classical era).
Rostas Prize The Edith
Sebestyen Rostas Prize in French was established by Professor Rostas,
a former faculty member and chairman of the department, to be given
annually to an outstanding junior or senior French major (or interdepartmental
major with a concentration in French) and who is interested in the
teaching of French language and literature.
Saintonge Prize The Paul
F. Saintonge Prize in French was established in honor of Professor
Saintonge, a former faculty member and chairman of the department,
by colleagues and students. Prizes are awarded annually to students
of superior achievement in French who intend to spend the Junior
Year abroad. The prize money is to be used primarily for purchasing
tickets to theatrical productions and for books.
