Also, congratulations to Professor Donna Van Handle of the Department of German Studies at Mount Holyoke College who was one of nine recipients nationwide to receive the 1998 Goethe Institit - AATG Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements in furthering the teaching of German at all levels in the United States. The award was presented at the ACTFL Conference in Chicago in November 1998.

Donna has been instrumental in advancing computer-assisted language learning in her own classroom and training other German teachers across the United States as well as in Germany to do so. She is co-author of the book Using the Internet in Instruction: A Guide for German Teachers. As a former Interim Dean of International Affairs at Mt. Holyoke, Donna was instrumental in establishing an exchange between Mount Holyoke and the University of Leipzig. She also co-directed the Wiesneck Seminar in 1996 and 1997 in Germany, and has twice been on the faculty of NEH Summer Institutes on post-wall Germany held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Since 1988 she has organized the annual Deutsches Theaterfest (German Theater Festival and Competition) for elementary, secondary and post-secondary students and teachers of German. She has been actively involved in promoting articulation and advocacy efforts for German. UPCOMING EVENTS

July 16-24: Kinder lernen Deutsch 1999
Kinder Lernen Deutsch is offered in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Boston and the AATG. Thanks to the support and assistance of Dr. Joan Murray, this program will continue this coming summer at its new location at Regis College in Weston, MA, July 16 - 24, 1999.

For further information, contact: Irmgard Hicks, Goethe Institut, 170 Beacon St. Boston, 02116-1420, Tel, 617-262-6050, E-mail: giboston7@mindspring.com

October 2 - Fall workshop: "Welcome to the Profession"
Jo Sanders, of Anchorage, Alaska, will present a program based on one of the most success-ful German programs in the country. She bases her program on family groups in the class-room. Individuals and family groups interrelate on this basis while learning German. Jo has presented to colleagues in several venues with enthusiastic response. This is a workshop of particular interest to new and prospective teachers. TA’s and newer teachers as well as experienced senior teachers, both secondary and post-secondary, are encouraged to participate. We all have a great deal to learn from each other.

October 29-30 - MaFLA Conference
Former AATG National President Keith Cothrun has agreed to come from his home in Las Cruces, NM. He will speak to conference attendees on national standards for students and teachers. Massachusetts German teachers will also be able to talk with Keith on issues of common concern (German enrollments, GAPP exchanges, Deutschstunde video program, etc.). The "German strand" will once again be provided throughout the conference which proved so successful last year.  Please e-mail Cherie Baggs, MaFLA Exhibits Chair, (cabaggs@aol.com) with your suggestions and questions.

Immersion weekend for teachers
The immersion program planned for summer has been postponed, and one is being planned by the Massachusetts Chapter of AATG for teachers and those interested in teaching for November. Watch for more information in the Fall Newsletter.

College/HS German Day
Every two years recently, we have sponsored a one-day immersion event for high school students of German. The date for this coming year (1999-2000) has not been set, but it will be at Tufts University in the early spring of 2000.
