This year's MaFLA Conference is a bit different
than last year's. Please, therefore, note the following:
1. There will be no Friday on-site registration.
2. Preregistration for Friday's sessions closed on Oct. 1.
3. There will be on-site registration on Saturday, fee: $25.00.
4. Provision will be made for PDPs.

COMING EVENTS

GERMAN DAY for HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS at
TUFTS
Tufts University and the MA Chapter are planning
a day of activities for high school students and their teachers. The event
will take place on Thursday, March 28, 1996 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p. m.
Tentative plans include workshops, a campus tour "auf deutsch", and videos.
Watch for more details and a sign-up form in the winter newsletter. To

AWARDS DINNER
This year's awards dinner is tentatively
scheduled for May 9th at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. DiDi Harrington
will plan the event. I f you would like to help DiDi, please contact her

AWARDS
BUNDESVERDIENSTKREUZ
On June 14, 1995 CHERIE BAGGS, German teacher
at Natick High School, was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz by German Consul
General Dr. Walter Gerhardt. The medal, given in acknowledgment of her
leading role in the German-American Partnership Program, is awarded to
only four individuals a year. No other educators have received the honor
in the past five years.
OUTSTANDING GERMAN EDUCATOR AWARD
This year's Outstanding German Educator Award
was presented to SUSAN THORNE, foreign language teacher at the John W.
Wynn Middle School in Tewksbury. Sue has worked tirelessly to promote the
teaching of German on the elementary school level. A frequent presenter
at the fall MaFLA Conference, Sue was instrumental in organizing the seven-day
Kinder Lernen Deutsch seminar held at Plymouth (NH) State college in July.
MASSACHUSETTS GERMAN INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR
AWARD
The Massachusetts German Instructor of the
Year Award will be presented for the first time at the Saturday MaFLA luncheon
to DIETHILD HARRINGTON of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. As president
of the MA Chapter, DiDi was responsible for many interesting and innovative
programs and workshops.
Hats off to CHERIE, SUE, and DIDI! THEY ARE
AN EXAMPLE TO US ALL.
DEUTSCHES THEATERFEST 1996
The 19th annual German Theatre Festival and
Competition will be held at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Ma. You
and your students are cordially invited to participate in next year's Festival,
to be held on Thursday, April 25, 1996. Dramatic presentations in German
of 15 to 20 minutes in length will be judged by a jury consisting of secondary
school teachers, members of the German and Theatre Departments at Mount
Holyoke College, and representatives from the Austrian Institute, the Goethe
Institute, and the Consulate of the Federal Republic in Boston. Prizes
will be awarded on the elementary, secondary, and college levels. For further

At the October 1994 business meeting of the
MA Chapter, it was decided to introduce $5:00 per annum membership dues.
A reduction in funds from the Federal Republic has resulted in less money
for the Chapter. We need these modest membership dues to function properly.

COURSES: The Goethe Institut offers German
language courses from beginning to advanced levels from September through
June. Information about fall courses may be obtained from the Institut.
SCHOLARSHIP: A scholarship for study at a
Goethe Institut in Germany in the summer of 1996 will be awarded to a MaFLA
member by the Goethe Institut Boston. The winner will attend a three-week
program for language and culture in Germany. The scholarship will cover
the cost of tuition, room and board, and participation in cultural activities.
