AATG Massachusetts Chapter Past President and MaFLA Board Member Inge Buerger Receives National Award at ACTFL Conference in Boston

Congratulations to Inge Buerger, German teacher at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, MA, who was one of nine recipients nationwide to receive the 2000 Goethe Institut - AATG Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements in furthering the teaching of German at all levels in the United States.  Inge taught German at the Pentucket Junior High School for fifteen years before joining the high school staff. At the junior high school she was involved in initiating a foreign language exploratory program for which she and her colleagues in French and Spanish wrote a curriculum and program guidelines. In part, due to this curriculum and the way it was implemented, Pentucket has a foreign language program which boasts equally strong enrollment in all three foreign languages being offered.

After moving to the high school. Inge initiated a GAPP – German American Partnership Program – that has been supported by the community and administration alike. For most of her years at Pentucket Regional High School, an exchange has existed with two schools in Germany.

Inge has participated in professional activities for many years. She recently served as President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the AATG and continues to serve on its Executive Board. She is also a member of the MaFLA Board. In her own school system, she is involved in the Pentucket Teachers’ Association, where she has served on the negotiation team, and she was recently elected Vice President. Last year, Inge was honored by MaFLA and the AATG Massachusetts as the recipient of the 5th Annual Massachusetts German Educator of the Year Award.

Past President of MaFLA Is 2000 Massachusetts German Educator of the Year

On Saturday, November 18, 2000, during the MaFLA Luncheon at the 34th Annual Meeting of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in Boston, Georg Steinmeyer of Brattleboro, VT, was honored by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MaFLA) as the recipient of the 6th Annual Massachusetts German Educator of the Year Award.

Steinmeyer has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Chapter of the AATG and of MaFLA, and has also served as President of both organizations as well as the presenter of workshops and leader of numerous foreign language initiatives. In 1975 he initiated one of the very first GAPP – German American Partnership Program – exchange programs between the Amherst Regional High School and a college preparatory secondary school in Germany. Most recently, it was his expertise and reliability which made it possible for the Massachusetts Chapter of the AATG to hold a very successful Total Immersion Weekend for Teachers of German from the New England region in his hometown of Brattleboro. In particular, Georg was recognized for his years of service, his inspiration and leadership. His call for close work and collaboration between the AATG and MaFLA, indeed between all AATs and state foreign language associations remains a priority for all of us. Georg, wir gratulieren!

DEUTSCHE WOCHE IN BAR HARBOR
8.-14. Juli 2001

The eighteenth session of the Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor will take place from July 8-14, 2001, on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. A total immersion program for middle, secondary and college teachers of German, the Deutsche Woche offers lectures, workshops and recreational activities designed to help you refresh your German skills and to acquire new ideas for teaching.

Ernst Endt, a language teacher from Eichstett (Bayern), who is also a teacher trainer and textbook writer, and who has run numerous seminars for the Goethe-Institut all over the world, will be this year’s seminar leader. His topic is "Das creative Klassenzimmer: Deutschlernen durch Musik, Video und Internet." The seminar will provide ideas for communicative and motivating classroom activities. Participants will create teaching units utilizing authentic materials such as newspaper articles, pop songs and video recordings, as well as by exploring the internet as a rich source for both teachers and learners.

Registration deadline is June 15, 2001. For more information, contact Dr. Peter Nutting, RR 1 Box 1970, South China, Maine 04358. Tel: 207-968-2510. Email: pwn@pivot.net

A Goethe Institut and AATG Massachusetts co-sponsored Seminar

This workshop took place on Saturday, February 3rd from 10am to 2pm at the Goethe Institut in Boston. It was attended by veteran as well as new teachers and graduate students from Tufts University. Jörg Frey began by introducing the "Werbemappe" which consists of an extensive collection of ideas, suggestions and information, useful for presenting and promoting the study of German to parents, guidance counselors, students and administrators. Every participant received a copy of this "Werbemappe" as well as many pamphlets, posters and slides at the end of the seminar.

After this, Saskia Stössel and Marion Frey of Tufts University presented their Mini-German Program which they created and taught to students at the Brown Elementary School in Somerville this fall. This program consisted of four lessons that taught these young students how to introduce themselves, greet each other, a little bit of geography to advocate for the study of German, numbers, colors and animals. The students also learned two Christmas carols. Most importantly, however, the students found out that learning a foreign language can be an enjoyable experience for them. This program was a positive experience for both the young students involved as well as the graduate students who taught them.

Following this presentation, Inge Buerger gave a brief look at the foreign language program in the Pentucket Regional School district, presenting the exploratory program which is offered to all students in the 7th grade at Pentucket Middle School and explained how students then choose one of the three languages offered starting in the 8th grade. She also discussed the GAPP program in terms of how it recruits, motivates and retains students in the German program.

Cherie Baggs finished the morning session by tying all the discussions together and reflecting on a variety of methods already tried and true and on additional activities that could be tried in order to advocate the study of German.

The afternoon session, presented by Susan Adams of Concord Academy was entitled: "Connecting Cultures: German-Americana in the Classroom as a Recruiting Tool". Susan focused on her unit on Carl Schurz and showed the participants how she teaches her students about this fascinating German who also became famous in the United States. She also pointed out how the students will become more involved and motivated, if information they learned in German class is connected to other subjects, such as history and if they can use this information across the curriculum.

This workshop was most informative and interesting and it was particularly enjoyable to be able to discuss these topics with other colleagues from all levels of instruction, elementary through college, and from all different parts of Massachusetts.
