TESTING and AWARDS PROGRAM

Parents and teachers were joined by special invited guests Barbara Hankin, representing the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Boston; Jörg Frey of the Goethe Institute, Boston; David Dollenmayer, Department of Modern Languages, Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and Donna Van Handle of Mount Holyoke College and former Representative for the Northeast Region on the Executive Council of the American Association of Teachers of German to honor Massachusetts high school students who scored in the 90th percentile on this year's AATG National Standardized Exam. The Awards Reception on May 15, 1997 was hosted by the Humanities Department of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and was attended by teachers and students from 21 schools from across the state.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the Massachusetts high school students who scored in the 90th percentile on this year's exam!

This year's DUDEN CERTIFICATE for outstanding contribution to the teaching of German and service in the Chapter was presented to VIJA SKUDRA of Masconomet Regional High School.
Entertainment was provided by KENNETH BROOKE, a German teacher/actor, who presented an interactive one man play about a German soldier in America during the Revolutionary War.


DEUTSCHES THEATERFEST

Twelve groups participated in this year's Theaterfest. First prize at the high school level went to students from No. Kingstown (RI) High School for their performance of DER ZAUBERER AUS BERLIN, an original play based on THE WIZARD OF OZ. At the college level first prize was awarded to students from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY for their performance of the final scene form Bertolt Brecht's DER KAUKASISCHE KREIDEKREIS.

DEUTSCHE WOCHE IN BAR HARBOR

The 14th session of the Deutsche Woche in Bar Harbor will take place from August 10-16 on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, ME. A total immersion program for middle, secondary, and college teachers of German, the Deutsche Woche offers lectures, workshops, and recreational activities designed to help you refresh your German skills and to acquire new ideas for teaching. This year's topics will focus on innovative methods for teaching literary texts and creative use of the World Wide Web for classroom projects and portfolios. The cost of the program is $395, which includes room, board, materials, and excursions in adjacent Acadia National Park. One graduate credit is available from the University of Connecticut for $10, and 4.5 continuing education units are available from the University of Maine for $5. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 30. Fall Conference
If anyone is interested in presenting a workshop at the 1997 conference, please contact RITA OLEKSAK at rita@mafla.org with your proposal. This year's theme is "We Are Making a Difference: Let's Celebrate!"
Of special interest to teachers of German: Jo Sanders, AATG Executive Council member, will do a pre-conference workshop. The AATG fall business meeting will be held this year on Friday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This is a change from previous years.

Classroom Idea Exchange
You are invited to submit a short description of a technique, activity, or idea that worked in your classroom. If accepted, your teaching tip will be printed in the MaFLA newsletter, and you will win a $25 honorarium from MaFLA. Tips should be no longer than 500 words typed and double spaced. Summer Computer Technology Workshops

PDP Workshops
On 17 May Sue Thorne, Chapter Vice President, presented a three-hour workshop entitled "Impressions of Monet." Participants were introduced to a thematic, interdisciplinary unit through which students can experience language, culture, and content outcomes. Sue has a similar unit available for German Expressionist artist Franz Marc. Workshop participants raved about Sue's presentation, calling it "one of the best MaFLA presentations ever." ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT

The New England Network of Academic Alliances in Foreign Languages and Literatures will sponsor an all-day conference on alternative assessment on Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997 at UMass Boston.
