Requirements for the Major
in German Studies
A minimum of 32 credits beyond German
Studies 201 and including 16 credits at the 300-level.
Courses
Required courses:
- German Studies 220: German Culture Today:
Stories and Histories
- German Studies 223: Topics in German Studies: German
Culture from 1800 to 2000
- Four 300-level seminars in German studies (or German 395: independent study for 4 credits) to include German 325: Senior Seminar (designed to explore theoretically and practically the nature of our field of inquiry and, except in special circumstances, to be elected in the spring semester of the senior year).
Elective Courses:
These courses should ideally add depth and focus to areas of special interest within the major, such as genre or medium (e.g., newspaper article, drama, political essay, film); theme (German identity: from the 19th-century nation state to today;s multiethnic society; German “revolutions”; German humor; Weimar film; German society through film); individual author (e.g., Marx, Bettina Brentano, Nietzsche, Fontane, Mann, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf, Bismarck, Hitler); or language study. Note that you may enroll in 223 or 315 more than once, providing the topic changes.
The department strongly recommends that students elect courses outside of the department which are related to German-speaking countries or Europe. These courses may be found in such fields as anthropology, art, economics, European studies, film studies, history, music, politics, philosophy, religion, or theatre arts. |
