Crucial to meeting the unit objectives is the identity journal.  This ongoing reflection  provides a culminating written assessment as well as the knowledge base for a variety of potential oral assesments.

Potential benefits of the Journal

• summarize and synthesize the material
• vocabulary practice
• provide an opportunity for creative and personal expression
• support the learning scenario activities

The following are some suggestions for focus topics for journal writing.

Pre and Post-Unification situation:

• Family situation (married, single, divorced, children)
• Living situation (renting, bought house, no place to live, …)
• Work situation (working full time, part-time, sometimes, no job, no job for a long time, student,…)
• Hopes, Expectations ? before and after the fall of the Wall

• Abortion, women’s rights
• Role of the State
• Jobs, Housing
• Foreigners, Asylum seekers
• Germany as a united country
• Pros and Cons of Unification

• Land
• People
• Attitudes
• Dangers
• Advantages
• Education

Identities can be created based on background material or made up.

Helmut Buczko - Rentner, der im Osten wohnt - 66 Jahre alt.

“Für ihn war die Wiedervereinigung ein Riesenglück. Sie langte für eine neue Sofagarnitur, einen Videoschnittplatz und ein gebrauchtes Honda-Sportcoupe. Sorgen macht sich Buczko, der vier Töchter und acht Enkelkinder hat, um die jungen Leute."

Er glaubt, daß die im Westen kein Konkurrenz aus dem Osten haben wollen. Er hatte Aufträge von Opel Stammwerk zur Entwicklung von Getrieben und konnte zeitwertig 25 Mitarbeiter beschäftigen. Doch dann kündigte seine Bank im vergangenen Jahr, wie Görner beteuert, “Ohne Vorwarnung,” die Kredite. Der Existengründer mußte Konkurs anmelden….Er vermutet, ein Konkurrent aus Westdeutschland habe sein Scheitern gewollt.
