The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in the flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert the air into tree. And in the ash is the small remnant of the part which did not come from air, that came from the solid Earth, instead.
These are beautiful things, and the content of science is wonderfully full of them. They are very inspiring, and they can be used to inspire others.
Richard Feynman
Think over the "content of science" we have studied in this course, and choose your own favorite example of a familiar phenomenon that looks very different when viewed from a scientific perspective.
Pursue your topic in greater depth than we did in class, using library resources to do so. Find at least 3 references, at least 2 of which must be from printed, refereed sources. Write a 3-5 page paper explaining what you have found. You may wish to consider such questions as:
These topics are suggestions. You may have a better idea!
During lab time Dec 5, 6, 7, we will have a tour of the science library with Sandy Ward, the science librarian, who will show us some tricks of the trade. Meet in the lab at 1. Well walk over to the science reference desk together. The tour will last from about 1:15 till 2:00, and you can spend the rest of the afternoon finding references for your topic, with guidance from your instructors.
