Graduate, Professional, and Post-baccalaureate Education

What percent of International Relations majors continued directly into graduate, professional and post-baccalaureate programs? Within 10 years?

While figures vary from year to year, approximately 27% of each graduating class between 1994-2000 has continued on directly into graduate, professional or post-baccalaureate programs within a year of graduation.  Based on longitudinal data, we also know that many more will enter graduate and professional programs within a five-year period.  The reasons for not continuing directly are varied, but include the need to gain experience before entry (particularly for MBA’s and MD’s), to clarify goals, to earn money for graduate school; and a desire to take “time off” before continuing. Thirty-five percent of the IR majors with information from the Class of 2001 went directly into a post-graduate program.  Fifty-four percent of IR alumnae with information have post-graduate education.  The breakdown of the types of post-graduate programs attended by the Class of 2001 and Classes 1991-2000 are identified in Table 1.
