Non-Academic Leave
A non-academic leave is granted by the Office of the Dean of the College to students who feel the need to take some time away from Mount Holyoke. For instance, if you are feeling a pull to take a semester away to work and earn some money, to be involved in important family issues, or to do the traveling you thought you might do after high school, you might want to consider a non-academic leave. Although the leave is called "non-academic," many students on non-academic leave do, in fact, take courses that may count toward Mount Holyoke's degree requirements (see Credit Transfer).
Because non-academic leaves are sometimes needed to cope with sudden emergencies, there is no deadline for application, but students are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as they begin to plan for a leave, even if they have not yet made a firm decision to go. A student who is late in notifying the College of her plans to be away for a semester deprives a prospective first-year student of the opportunity to attend Mount Holyoke.
Students on non-academic leave from Mount Holyoke are still considered candidates for the Mount Holyoke degree; if you do take classes elsewhere on your leave, you must enroll elsewhere as a guest or visiting (“non-degree-seeking”) student, not as a transfer or degree-seeking student. Students can be degree candidates at only one institution. As you read on to learn more about non-academic leave, remember that an important part of deciding to take a leave is talking with your family, your advisor, and your academic dean.
