REU 1989
The students
in Senechal's group were Eric Hsu (Harvard), Patricia Nelson
(St. Olaf), Brooke Shipley (Harvard) and Suzanne Tourville (Agnes
Scott). The group implemented John Neuberger's algorithm for steepest
descent in function spaces relative to a natural structure given by a
Sobolev metric. They applied it to a number of variational problems,
concentrating on the minimal surface equation. They compared running
times of algorithms using the standard and Sobolev metrics.
