Performance: acting and directing
Joyce Devlin spent ten years in professional theatre and television before beginning her academic career. Trained as an actor/dancer/singer, Devlin's interest in performance ranges from serious drama to performance art to musical theatre. Her theatrical publications include an annotated bibliography of scenes and monologues for women, and essays on alternative British theatre. Former chair of the theatre arts department, Devlin has also served as president of the New England Theatre Conference and chair of the new play division of the American College Theatre Festival.
In the past decade, Devlin has directed Tartuffe, Lysistrata, As You Like It, Isn’t It Romantic, Night of the Iguana, and Tin Can People.
A classical and jazz bassist, Devlin is currently performing “Imagine a Woman My Age,” a solo piece in which she acts out a story while accompanying herself on the upright bass.
Devlin teaches Introduction to Performance, Directing, Performance I and II, Advanced Acting/Directing, Suzuki Actor Training, and a seminar on Caryl Churchill.
