Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Athletics

Specialization
Crew

Jeanne FriedmanJeanne Friedman, head crew coach, is a Level III Certified United States Rowing Coach and a member of the NCAA Regional Seeding Committee. She has led Mount Holyoke's crew team to four Seven Sisters Championships, one NEWMAC Championship, and numerous medals at ECAC and New England regional championships since her arrival in 1991. Friedman believes in "the importance of a holistic approach to rowing—mental training as well as physical."
Friedman's own athletic accomplishments include being a United States gold medalist for lightweight-4 (1974) and lightweight-8 (1975), and receiving a gold medal for single (1986) and a silver medal for lightweight-4 and a bronze for single (1996) at the Master's National Regattas.

Friedman is the executive director of Rowing Strong, Rowing Together, a joint program with the MHC crew team and the Care Center of Holyoke. The program is in its fifth year and uses rowing to help inner-city parenting teens learn teamwork and gain self-confidence and improved self-esteem. Friedman is also the lead coach at the Row As One camp, run by MHC alumna Holly Metcalf '81, an Olympic gold medal oarswoman.

Before coming to Mount Holyoke, Friedman was the assistant crew coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1988 to 1990. She is a founding member of Boston University's crew team.
