Matthew McKeever

Associate Professor of Sociology

Specialization: International comparative social stratification; inequality and economic sociology; Southern Africa; Eastern Europe

Matthew McKeever’s work focuses primarily on issues of social and economic inequality. He studies these issues in international comparative perspective, with a primary focus on the countries of southern Africa. He has also studied economic inequality in the U.S., including the economic consequences of family structure. His research has appeared in Social Forces, Sociology of Education, Demography and other journals. He is also a contributor to Governing American Cities: Inter-Ethnic Coalitions, Competition, and Conflict (Russell Sage Press, 2001) and Fragile Families and the Marriage Agenda (Kluwer, 2005).

McKeever teaches Survey Research and Data Analysis; The Sociology of Education; Introduction to Sociology; and Social Change in Southern Africa. He also co-teaches Education: Practice and Policy in Post-Apartheid South Africa, a J-term course in June which places students in classrooms and research agencies in Pretoria, South Africa.

Before coming to Mount Holyoke McKeever was assistant professor at the University of Kentucky and a postdoctoral researcher at the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.
