Bruce Arnold is the coauthor, with Andrew Aronson and Gil Lawall, of Love and Betrayal: A Catullus Reader (Prentice Hall, 2000). His research has been published in the Classical Journal and Latin Literature and Roman History.

In addition to teaching elementary and intermediate Latin, Arnold has created innovative courses, including Sappho's Muse, a writing-intensive January Term course that examines Sappho's lyric poetry and her influence both on ancient Roman love poets, such as Catullus and Ovid, and on modern literature. Arnold's first-year seminar, Greek Tragedy and Film, examines the evolution of tragedy in classical Athens, from choral performance to sophisticated drama. In addition to studying Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, students examine the influence of ancient tragedy on modern filmmakers, such as Roman Polanski and Woody Allen.

Before coming to Mount Holyoke, Arnold was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Washington and Reed College, and an instructor at the Johns Hopkins Center for the Advancement of Talented Youth and Evergreen State College.

In 1989, Arnold was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Rome Fellowship.
