Music 100 Exemption Exam Materials

The Music 100 exemption examination is in two parts.

1. The written portion evaluates:

  • Writing all major and minor scales, including natural, harmonic, and melodic minor.
  • Writing key signatures for all major and minor keys.
  • Identification of all intervals within an octave,both by size (e.g., second or fifth) and quality (perfect, augmented, diminished, minor, or major).
  • Writing triads of specified quality (major, minor, augmented, or diminished) from any given note.

2. The aural portion evaluates:

  • Identification of all intervals within an octave, both by size (e.g., second or fifth) and quality (perfect, augmented, diminished, minor, or major).
  • Identification of quality of triads ( major, minor, augmented, or diminished).
  • Notation of a simple, brief melody after repeated hearings.

In both portions of the exemption exam, the ability to read and write notes in both treble and bass clefs is assumed.

No distribution credit is given for exemption from Music 100.

The Music 100 Exemption Exam will be given on Fri. Feb. 1 and Mon. Feb. 4, 4 pm in Room 109 Pratt.
