2006 MUSIC MAJORS |
|
Emily F. Castle, a native of Bellevue,
WA, has a life-long association with Mount Holyoke College: her mother
and two aunts are alumnae, her sister Vanessa is also a 2006 alum.
A music major and English minor, Emily studied voice with Melinda
Spratlan. She was an active participant in Concert Choir, Glee
Club (soloist and section leader), Abbey Singers (Co-Coordinator)
and
Vocal Jazz (President). Reflecting on her time at Mount Holyoke,
Emily says "I have learned more than how to analyze music in
sonata form, or how to transpose 12th century music into modern notation;
I have truly learned to love music! |

Hwan H. Kim, from Staten Island, NY was a double major in music
and sociology. A piano student of Gary Steigerwalt, Hwan served as
a student academic liaison for music. She is a co-recipient of the
Helen Blyth Hazen Musaic Prize II to the graduate whose work in music
best reflects the integration of music history, theory, and performance.
Earlier in her Mount Holyoke career Hwan was awarded theDorothy C.
Currey Scholarship and the Music Department Prize to the outstanding
junior major or minor. She plans to work as a translator in a Korean-American
organization. |

Katherine P. Vogele, from Lexington, MA, is a music major with
a minor in education. A voice student of Melinda Spratlan, Katherine
has been singing in choirs since she was eight years old, and managed
at some point in her college career to participate in all of Mount
Holyoke's choirs--Vocal Jazz, Concert Choir, Glee Club, Chamber Singers--as
well as Amherst's Concert Choir. She served as President, Manager,
and soprano I section leader of Glee Club. A recipient of the Dorothy
C. Currey Scholarship, Katherine completed the course work required
for a music teaching license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In 2006-07 she will work as the assistant director to the Amherst
College Choral Society and as a graduate assistant to beginning theory
classes. |

RoseAnna Cyr grew up in northern
Vermont, where her family operates a maple sugar farm. A music major
with a minor in
education, RoseAnna was awarded the Dorothy C. Currey Scholarship
during her senior year. A voice student of Cheryl Cobb, Rose Anna
was a member and soloist with the Concert Choir and Glee Club, two
years soprano 2 section leader of Glee Club, and performed occasionally
with Vocal Jazz. As a trombonist, RoseAnna played with the Orchestra,
Big Band, and Chamber Jazz Ensemble. She plans to complete the student
teaching required for teacher certification before pursuing a Masters
degree in music therapy. |

E. Michelle Brooks, a native of Amherst, MA, was a
music major and religion minor. A voice student of Chery Cobb, Michelle
was a member and soloist with the Mount Holyoke Glee Club since her
sophomore year. In 2003 she founded and directed the first Five College
Gospel Choir and hosted the first "Gospel Explosion" concerts
at MHC in 2003 and 2004. Michelle performs extensively throughout
the Northeast with various gospel and church groups and with several
recording artists and ensembles. She was a co-recipeint of the Helen
Blyth Hazen Prize I to the outstanding graduate who began her serious
study of music at Mount Holyoke. She has been accepted to the Professional
Diploma program of the Berkelee College of Music in Boston. |

Hannah Shook, from Wichita, KS, was a music major
and psychology minor. A flute student of Adrianne Greenbaum, Hannah
was consistently involved in nearly every aspect of music at Mount
Holyoke. Her senior year alone she served as student conductor and
principal flutist of the Orchestra, Glee Club Alto I section leader,
student concert manager for the Music Department and student academic
liaison. A recipient of the Dorothy C. Currey Scholarship, Hannah
was a co-recipient of the Helen Blyth Hazen Music Prize II, awarded
to the graduate whose work in music best reflects the integration
of music history, theory, and performance. She plans to continue
both her study of flute and conducting while applying to Masters
degree programs in music education. |

Malgorzata Lach, a native of Poland and former U.
S. Postal Service worker, was a Frances Perkins scholar. She majored
in music and was a student of Phillip de Fremery. She was co-recipient
of the Helen Blyth Music Prize I awarded to the outstanding graduate
who began her serious study of music at Mount Holyoke. In the summer
of 2005, Malgorzata apprenticed with Amherst luthier, Alan Chapman
and built her own guitar. She is going on to graduate school to study
music theory at the Hartt School of Music, Hartford, CT. |

Erin Vogel, a native of Yorba Linda, CA, was a double
major in music and English. She studied flute with Alison Hale and
was member of the Mount Holyoke Orchestra and flute choir. She was
also a member of the UMass marching band for several years. Erin
says that the best thing about being a music major was the people--both
the gifted and dedicated faculty and the most interesting and sincere
students at the college. Plans for the future include traveling and
teaching.

Nancy J. Gustafson has sung on the world's greatest stages with such
operatic
stars as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido
Domingo,
José Carreras,
and Joan Sutherland.
Elizabeth Onyemelukwe Garner '89 - Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Onyemelukwe
Garner '89 turned down Harvard to come to Mount Holyoke.
Mara Bonde '91- On the Road to Stardom, a rising star shines in the
competitive world of performing arts.
Sarah Davol '81 - Sarah Davol enjoys a career performing on historical
and modern oboes throughout North America and Europe.
Alison Hale '75 - Alison Hale, flutist with Portland ME Symphony, also
enjoy teaching at Mount Holyoke and Amherst Colleges
