Performance Courses
Students may enroll in individual performance studies without prerequisite, but continued study after the initial semester is dependent on enrollment in or exemption from Music 100 (Course Materials). The Music 100 Exemption Exam (Exam Materials) will be given on

Fri. Sept. 5 at 4 pm in Pratt, Rm 109 for the Fall 2008 semester.

 

 

Level of Study
100-Level

Successful completion of, or exemption from, Music 100 allows up to 8 academic credits of individual performance study on one instrument at the 100 level.

200 Level
Following successful completion of 8 credits of 100-level performance study on one instrument, the student will automatically advance to 200-level study, for which there are no credit limitations. Students enrolled in 200-level study will be expected to participate in at least one public performance situation per semester. Earlier entry in 200 level is per I.

N.B Continuation of studies at the 200 level depends upon evaluation the instructor and is not automatic.

300-Level
Usually taken only in the senior year--represents the highest level of assimilation of theory, history and performance studies. Admission to 300-level presumes independent work on the part of the student be expected in choosing repertoire and planning the performance.

Students enrolled in one semester of study at the 300-level will be required to prepare a half-recital or its equivalent.

Students enrolled in a full year of study at the 300-level will be required to prepare one full recital program or its equivalent. ("Equivalent": two half-recitals, or one half-recital plus other significant public performance.)

Students may only advance to the 300-level of performance studies upon:

1. completion of:
a. one 200 level theory course
b. one 200 level history course

2. recommendation of the instructor

3. approval of the department chair

4. demonstration of public performance
a. FOR ONE SEMESTER OF 300-LEVEL STUDY: public
performance (performance on a shared informal recital) in each
of the two semesters preceding entry in 300-level study.

b. FOR TWO SEMESTERS OF 300-LEVEL STUDY: a half
recital in one of the 2 semesters preceding entry into 300-level
study. At the instructor's discretion, repertoire from the half
recital may be repeated on the full recital.

Four credits are granted for each semester of performance study at the 300-level.

Registration
Students who want to take private performance lessons and/or play in a chamber music ensemble must register on-line during the official registration period by the 10th academic day of each semester.

Students are expected to study with Mount Holyoke performance faculty for the first year of study.

The department cannot guarantee space to any student, even a returning one, if she is not properly registered.

Students who want to enroll in performance studies for the first time must go thru the audition/interview process. They should:
1. Sign up for an audition on the bulletin board opposite the Music Office in Pratt.
2. Come to the audition prepared to perform two contrasting pieces.
3. Bring class schedule to the audition.
Students are allowed to register on ISIS only after permission is granted by the performance instructor.

New Student Placement
Performance study for beginners will be offered only to declared music majors, with the exception of voice and historic instruments. Auditions are required for all performance study and placement is not guaranteed at any level.

Individual Performance Study Auditions for Fall 2008 will be held Fri. Sept. 5 from 1-4 pm.

When you arrive on campus, sign up for a time on the bulletin board across from the Music Office, Pratt 208.

Enrollments in all areas of Performance Studies are limited. Students registering for instrumental or vocal studies at Mount Holyoke for the first time are placed according to the following:
1. Music Majors and Minors.
2. First, Second, and Third-year students, according to level of experience and ability. (First, Second, and Third-year students who were wait-listed without assignment in the previous semester are given higher priority.)

Music 100 Requirement
Because the Music Department believes that students enrolled in individual performance studies must have a thorough knowledge of the rudiments of music.

Successful completion of, or exemption from, Music 100 must occur within the first two semesters of performance study.

The Music 100 Exemption Exam will be given on Fri. Sept. 5 at 4 pm. in Pratt 109 for the fall 2008semester.

Course Fees
12 lessons per semester

50 min. lesson (2 cr) - $600
30 min. lesson ( l cr) - $360

Grant-in-Aid
Grant-in-Aid is available through the Music Office for students who receive financial aid to the College.

l. Applications are available in the Music Office.

2. Applications must be submitted to the Music Department Administrative Assistant by the deadline.

The deadline for Fall 2008 is Fri. Sept. 5, 4:30 pm

3. An application must be filled out for every semester that you need aid.

4. There are no automatic renewals.

Statement Regarding Lessons and Makeups
1. All students registered for individual performance studies will be scheduled for 12 lessons a semester.

2. If a lesson is canceled by your teacher, it will be rescheduled .

3. If you cancel the lesson due to illness with advance notice, the lesson will be rescheduled.

4. If you cancel a lesson for any reason other than illness, the lesson will not be rescheduled.

5. In accordance with College policy, there are no lessons on Mountain Day.

6. Makeup lessons will be scheduled as soon as possible after the missed lesson. It is hoped that by the ninth week of each semester, no student will be more than one lesson behind.

Ensemble Performance
Enrollment in any large or small ensemble is open to all students by audition only. 1 credit
