"A Poet in Search of a Poetics: On F. T. Marinetti's Pre-Futurist  Criticism."

Luca Somigli, associate professor of Italian at the University of Toronto, will give a lecture entitled: "A Poet in Search of a Poetics: On F. T. Marinetti's Pre-Futurist  Criticism." Co-sponsored by Mount Holyoke departments of French, Italian and Classics; Umass department of Italian; and the Florence Purington Fund, this lecture will be free and open to the public.

Background:
Professor Somigli received his PhD in comparative literature from SUNY Stony Brook in 1996. His research concentrates on Futurism, Italian Modernism, Italian Science fiction, Ezra Pound, and literary periodicals.

He is the author of two books: Legitimizing the Artist. Manifesto  Writing and European Modernism 1885-1915. Toronto: University of  Toronto Press, 2003. [Winner of the 2004 book award of the American Association for  Italian Studies] and Per una satira modernista. La narrativa di Wyndham Lewis. Firenze: Cadmo, 1995.

He edited three anthologies of essays: Italian Modernism: Italian  Culture between Decadentism and Avant-Garde. Edited with Mario  Moroni. Toronto: University of Toronto Press; Italian Prose Writers,  1900-1945. Vol. 264 of Dictionary of Literary Biography. Edited with  Rocco Capozzi. Detroit, Washington, and London: Gale Research Inc.,  2002 and The Literary Journal as a Cultural Witness. 1943-1993: Fifty  Years of Italian and Italian American Reviews.
