After completing his undergraduate degree in International Studies
at Kalamazoo College, Professor Crumbaugh went on to earn a Ph.D.
in Spanish at Emory University. While formally trained in literary
studies, his interests, both as regards scholarship and teaching,
include film, social history, and economic development, all in the
context of modern Spain. Also affiliated with the film studies and
European studies programs, Crumbaugh has authored articles on topics
ranging from urban planning in Bilbao to propaganda film during the
Franco dictatorship, and has taught courses on topics such as consumer
culture and traveling in Spain. Currently, he is preparing a book-length
manuscript on the role of tourism in contemporary Spanish culture.
Professor Crumbaugh returns frequently to San Sebastián—capital
of the Basque province Gipuzkoa—where he learned the Basque
language, and has conducted research on local politics, literary history,
and the Basque understanding of cultural “heritage.” In
addition to his scholarly writing, which can be found in the Hispanic
Research Journal and other publications, he makes occasional freelance
contributions to the Basque newspaper Berria. |
