After completing his undergraduate degree in International Studies at Kalamazoo College, Professor Crumbaugh went on to earn a Ph.D. in Spanish at Emory University. While formally trained in literary studies, his interests, both as regards scholarship and teaching, include critical theory, film, social history, and development studies, all in the context of modern Spain. Also affiliated with the film studies and European studies programs, Crumbaugh has authored articles on topics ranging from urban planning in Bilbao to propaganda film during the Franco dictatorship, and has taught courses on topics such as consumer culture and the notion of backwardness. He is also the author of Destination Dictatorship: The Spectacle of Spain's Tourist Boom and the Reinvention of Difference (SUNY Press 2009). His most recent work examines prevailing ideas about victimhood and political violence since the Spanish Civil War, including the media focus on the “victims of terrorism.”

Professor Crumbaugh returns frequently to San Sebastián—capital of the Basque province Gipuzkoa—where he learned the Basque language, and has conducted research on local politics, literary history, and the Basque understanding of cultural “heritage.” In addition to his scholarly writing, which can be found in the Hispanic Research Journal and other publications, he makes occasional freelance contributions to the Basque newspaper Berria.
