The Major

A major must acquire a foundation in the three areas of design, performance (acting and directing), and theatre history and theory; but thereafter she is free to tailor her program to fit her particular interests. With her faculty adviser she is expected to assume responsibility for the shape and emphasis of her theatre training, through elective courses and practical experiences, as part of an overall liberal arts education.

All majors must fulfill a production card. (page 3 of handbook - see your adviser to discuss obtain a copy of the production card and discuss requirements).

16 credits above the 100 level (at least 1 course at the 300 level)

A student's work can culminate in a senior independent project (395) and honors thesis in any aspect of theatre. An interested student, whether a major or not, should read the “Guidelines for Theatre Independent Projects” (enclosed in this handbook). A preliminary proposal must be submitted on or before December 1 of her junior year. Final proposals must be submitted in early March 1 of her junior year and will be considered in light of the Department's production plans and resources.

Auditions for Mount Holyoke College's theatre productions are open to students enrolled in any courses in the Five Colleges. Mount Holyoke students are encouraged to attend auditions on the other four campuses.

Independent Study

Independent Studies are available to qualified students wishing to explore coursework that is not offered at the Five Colleges. To submit an Independent Study proposal for department approval, the student, in collaboration with the instructor, must provide the following:

  • A written outline clearly articulating the reasons for the Independent Study.
  • A suggested schedule of study, including the number and nature of written assignments, possible reading list and the expectations of the student and her instructor.
  • A brief narrative stating the student's qualifications for independent, intensive work.

Timeline: A complete proposal should be submitted by the end of the semester before the time of proposed study.
