FALL SEMESTER

Harlequin's Lesson in Love

a short comedy by Pierre Marivaux along with a brief work-in-progress The Brain Piece, directed by Roger Babb
Harlequin is 45 minutes long and was Marivaux's first successful collaboration with the Italian Comedians in Paris.  It incorporates Marivaux's delightfully frank and seemingly naïve dialog wth elements of Commedia dell'arte, and features a small flock of musical sheep.
The Brain Piece is an investigation of recent breakthroughs in neuroscience and uses a BBC podcast as a dramaturgical device to illustrate certain conditions.   The work-in-progress is about 12 minutes long and is light and humorous in tone.

SPRING SEMESTER

The Ridiculous Précieuses
by Molière
directed by Roger Babb
This play was Moliere's first success as a writer employing the stock resources of French farce and Italian Commedia delle'arte and his own maturing talents of observation, witty dialog and mimicry.  It is a farce about preciosity, an exaggeration of 17th century France's quest for elegance and refinement.  Pretence was a frequent target for Moliere, he enjoyed blowing it up with the earthy humor and exaggerated rhetoric that is otfen exhibited in his early short farces.

Hello Failure
directed by Brooke O'Harra
Kristen Komas' Hello Failure is a sprawling associative neo-realistic comedy of beauty involving seven submariners' wives, one counterfeit Civil War ghost,
a lusty renegade hairdresser and a poignant potted plant all just making it through the day.   Barely.
