Girls Inc. is a non-profit organization in Holyoke, MA that works at empowering young girls ages six to eighteen to be successful, through after-school programs that encourage healthy minds and bodies. The organization primarily focuses on six- to twelve-year-olds. I chose to profile Director Daisy Pereira because I was eager to learn more about how non-traditional environmental activism was taking place in the community and if or how this organization was cognizant of its role in environmental activism. Although I had hoped to speak at greater length with Daisy, and also to interview more members of the staff and participating students, I was able to have a successful experience in the limited amount of time that they were able to make available to me. Girls Inc. does not consciously regard itself, or its staff members, as environmental justice advocates. But, Daisy agreed that they could be considered such a group because of their commitment to insuring safe and healthy environments for all the girls and families that they serve. |
