Apply as a Foreign Fellow

A fellowship covers all or part of the costs of tuition, room and board at the College and includes a stipend that helps cover personal expenses such as books, travel and medical insurance. Although these fellowships are awarded for one year of study, occasionally they are renewed for a second year.

As a Foreign Fellow, you will spend six to eight hours a week working in one of the modern language departments (Asian, French, German, Italian or Spanish) as a conversation assistant. Some of the fellows serve as language assistants by living in Ham Hall, where they organize the language tables.|

How to Apply

Applications for the Foreign Fellowships are due on February 1 each year. To apply, you must submit the following documents to the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives (you may download the forms from this Web site, or request copies from the Center for Global Initiatives):

  1. A statement, in English, giving a brief autobiography, your reasons for wishing to study at Mount Holyoke College, your general plan for study here, and your career plans after the completion of your studies. If you have a preference for a position as Language Fellow (rather than Language Assistant), you should describe the reason for that special interest.
  2. The completed application form.
  3. A report from your secondary school completed by the principal or headmaster, not just one of your teachers. The person completing the form should attach an official copy of your academic record (transcript), showing individual courses taken and marks earned.
  4. A report from your college or university completed by a registrar, dean, or department head. The person completing the form should attach an official copy of your academic record (transcript), showing individual courses taken and marks earned.
  5. Report of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score.
  6. Three (or four) letters of recommendation from persons other than those submitting the official records. Two letters should be from professors acquainted with you and your academic work; one letter should be from someone qualified to report on your proficiency in English. In addition, you may submit a recommendation from your employer(s), if any.
