MHC Update
September 2013 :: Newsletter for Families and Friends

It's a new year and MHC has a new message:  MHC: never fear / change

Orientation 2013The School Year Begins! Students moved in (with a little help from parents) Fall Orientation 2013 was chock full of activity with sessions that sparked dialogue among new students on a wide variety of subjects: academics, the common read, alcohol and other drugs, sexual assault and awareness, the honor code, LITS, an identity workshop, and other areas essential to being prepared for campus life. The Orientation Leaders prepared their traditional "Orientation 101", a variety show of skits poking fun at Mount Holyoke life, with upper class students lining the balconies of Chapin Auditorium cheering for and welcoming the new students. The feedback around campus was that it was a successful Orientation with new friendships being formed, thoughts, and ideas being shared—exactly what we want for our new students.

Once oriented, we kicked things off with high-energy Convocation activities.

MHC CUSP courseOne of the First Year Seminar Programs visited the archives and parents will be glad to know that their students began writing letters home on their first Saturday morning on campus. Using their great-great grandmother class of 1917 as inspiration, these students read letters home from the turn of the 20th century to reflect on all that has changed and all that remains the same. Check out the exhibit used in the course here: https://dla.mtholyoke.edu
