Grand Reopening

Members of the Mount Holyoke community are invited to celebrate our grand reopening following a three-month renovation. Designed by Hill Engineers, Architects, Planners, Inc., the renovation enabled us to bring the College’s rare book collection from the seventh floor of Miles-Smith into an expanded and improved Archives and Special Collections suite on the ground floor of Dwight Memorial Hall. We now have a new rare book room with compact shelving, a refurbished reading room, and a state-of-the-art security system.

We are hosting an open house on Friday, November 7 at 3:00 to publicly thank the individuals who have been instrumental in making this project a reality.  To commemorate the event, Professor of Economics James Hartley and Mellon Professor of English Christopher Benfey will offer their expert insights as to what exactly makes special collections so special. Their recent books will be available for sale; Hartley’s anthology entitled Mary Lyon: Documents and Writings (Doorlight Publications) and Benfey’s newly released American Audacity: Literary Essays North and South (University of Michigan Press.)

Rounding out the celebration is an exhibition, “Miscellaneous Antiquities,” a selection of exceptional works from the more than 11,000 rare books in Special Collections.

Refreshments will be served.

Friday, November 7, 2008, 3:00 p.m., Archives and Special Collections Lobby, ground floor Dwight Memorial Hall
