For Faculty

Reserving Space

The Carson Teaching Gallery, named for Shirley M. Carson (Class of 1934), is a mediated space available to faculty and students for semester classes, single class visits, or individual viewing appointments. Selections from over 20,000 original works of art and artifacts from the Art Museum and the Skinner Museum can be displayed temporarily for class use.

We encourage visits to take place during weekday museum hours (Tuesday-Friday, 11-5). With advance notice, visits may be scheduled at other times. Contact Ellen Alvord, Coordinator of Academic Affairs at 413.538.3249 to schedule a visit. Please include your name and contact information, the course title, the requested date and time of the visit, and the number of students in the class.

Searching the Collection

Visit the Five College Museums/Historic Deerfield Collections Database to search our collection.

The database is shared by six museums and includes all of the objects in the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum’s collection. Thumbnail images are available for 2,500 works of art and artifacts; digitization of the Museum’s collection is ongoing.

Search Tips

  • Use MH in the Object Number field to retrieve items exclusively from the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum.
  • Request a password, using the “login” feature, to create and save groups of objects.
  • Museum staff is available to help faculty members access the museum’s resources, prepare a list of relevant works of art, and to plan and/or conduct museum visits.

Other Collections

There are a number of collections on the Mount Holyoke College campus. Some of them are well known and easily accessible to faculty and students; others are fascinating but much less visible. All of them help document the unique history of Mount Holyoke College.  The Art Museum has undertaken a project to gather information about these various collections. This is meant to be a first step in understanding what exists at Mount Holyoke College and how faculty and students might draw upon these collections in teaching and learning. Please contact Curator Wendy Watson at 413.538.2585 for more information about the campus collections project.
