Wine and the Human Spirit: Ritual, Remedies, and Revelry
2 September-12 December 2010
This is a cross-disciplinary exhibition that treats the historical importance of wine in western culture. The evidence from which it will draw is primarily art historical, but textual sources—both literary and scientific—will also be used to chart the flow of ideas. Wine and the Human Spirit will be the first exhibition held in the United States to examine the beverage’s spiritual benefits in light of its psychological, physiological, and alleged pharmacological effects. The story is timeless, beginning in the Neolithic period and continuing until the present day, and will be told through a variety of works of art including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic works.
