2008-09 Season Recap
Led by fifth year head coach Michelle Scecina, the Mount Holyoke College women’s basketball team posted an overall record of 7-19 in 2008-09. After a one year hiatus, the Lyons returned to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, falling 55-40 to the tope seeded Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the quarterfinal round. They finished with a 4-7 mark in league play.
Mount Holyoke was at its best in late January, when it picked up consecutive victories over the Coast Guard Academy (47-36), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (64-54) and Smith College (53-45). In the final week of the regular season, the Lyons completed the season sweep of Smith (56-52). Their remaining triumphs came against Vassar College (47-42), Roger Williams University (54-30) and Emerson College (54-49).
Junior Erin Cain averaged team highs of 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game en route to earning NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team accolades. The guard drained 35 three pointers and also totaled 46 assists and 35 steals.
Senior guard Katie Austen was selected to the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Senior All-Star Classic after tallying 9.0 points and 5.7 boards per outing. Her 53 assists were good for tops on the squad.
Fellow guard Christine Chancy made an immediate impact on the program, averaging 7.5 points 6.1 rebounds per contest. She racked up four double-doubles.
