2007-08 Season Recap

Led by 17th year head coach Jeanne Friedman, the Mount Holyoke College crew team posted solid results during the 2007-08 season. Leading the way was senior Ashley Didion, who became the fourth rower/coxswain in program history to earn Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division III Pocock All-America honors. She was voted to the second team.

The Lyons participated in the Head of the Housatonic Regatta (10/6/07) to kick off their fall slate. Mount Holyoke’s varsity eight boat highlighted the day with a second place finish in its race. Competing against some of the top squads from around the region, the Lyons earned the silver medal with a time of 16:27. Mount Holyoke’s varsity four boat posted outstanding results, finishing in fourth place in the 15 team field with a time of 18:06.

Two weeks later (10/21/07), the Lyons traveled to Boston, Mass. to compete in the 43rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Racing amongst 44 teams in the Collegiate Eights event, Mount Holyoke earned a tenth place finish with a time of 18:18. It was the fifth best finish amongst the 22 Division III competitors in the race. The Lyons finished ahead of fellow New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals Coast Guard Academy, Wellesley College, WPI and Clark University. Mount Holyoke also defeated Ithaca College for the first time.

For the second year in a row, the Seven Sisters Championship was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Mount Holyoke, which won the event in 2005, retained its title as a result.

CrewThe Lyons took part in seven competitions during the spring, consistently producing top notch results. Six of their events took place on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

At the NEWMAC Championships (4/19/08), Mount Holyoke amassed 38 points to secure second place in the Florence Jope Smith Cup Point standings. All three varsity crews finished second in their respective races to lead the way. The novice eight boat chipped in with a third place showing in its competition. Juniors Elissa Center and Katie Ouellette were selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference Varsity Team, while first year Elizabeth Bernal earned NEWMAC All-Conference Novice Team accolades.

The Lyons competed in the New England Rowing Championships (5/3/08) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Collegiate Regatta (5/11/08) to round out their 2007-08 campaign. At the New England Rowing Championships, the varsity eight boat grabbed third place in the Petite Final with a time of 7:13.548. They were the ninth best squad overall and ranked seventh amongst NCAA Division III competitors. In the novice event, Mount Holyoke crossed the line in 7:29.643 to secure a fourth place finish in the Grand Final. The Lyons wrapped up their season at the ECAC Championships the following weekend, collecting a ninth place finish overall.
