crew practiceMount Holyoke crew celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007. Each year 50-70 women represent Mount Holyoke in Division III intercollegiate races, competing in the toughest league in the country. Both the novice and varsity squads compete in the fall and the spring. Training for the crew team includes early morning water sessions, as well as aerobic workouts and weightlifting three times per week. Spring races lead up to the New England Championship Regatta, and a top performance there will advance the team to the Avaya Collegiate Championship Regatta.

Led by head coach Jeanne Friedman, the Mount Holyoke College crew team posted solid results in each of its two events in the fall of 2007.

In its season opener, the Lyons participated in the Head of the Housatonic Regatta (10/6). Mount Holyoke’s varsity eight boat highlighted the day with a second place finish in its race. Racing against some of the top squads from around the regions, the Lyons earned the silver medal with a time of 16:27. Members of the varsity eight boat included seniors Preya Nixon (coxswain), Ashley Didion, Christine DeLeo and Betsey Vance, along with juniors Elissa Center, Sarah Gray and Katie Ouelette and sophomores Jessica Suhowatsky and Kirstie Young. The Lyons varsity four boat posted outstanding results, finishing in fourth place in the 15 team field with a time of 18:06. Nixon (coxswain), Didion, Young, Gray and Ouelette composed Mount Holyoke's boat.

Two weeks later, Mount Holyoke traveled to Boston, Mass. to compete in the 43rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Racing amongst 44 teams in the Collegiate Eights event, the Lyons earned a tenth place finish with a time of 18:18. It was the fifth best finish amongst the 22 Division III competitors in the race. Mount Holyoke finished ahead of fellow NEWMAC rivals Coast Guard Academy, Wellesley College, WPI and Clark University. It also defeated Ithaca College for the first time.

For the second year in a row, the Seven Sisters Championship was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Mount Holyoke, which won the event in 2005, retained its title as a result.

Over the past several years the team has won many honors: first place at the Seven Sisters Regatta in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, and 2005; first place at the 1997 and 2007 NEWMAC Championship; gold medal for the Novice-8 at the 2007 and silver medals for Lightweight-8 at the 1997 and 2001 New England Rowing Championships; top Division III finish for Lightweight-4 at the 2001 Head of the Charles; and, silver medal for Varsity-4 at the 2003 ECAC Regatta. In 2003 the team also placed second at the Seven Sisters Regatta and third at the NEWMAC Championship.

As a Mount Holyoke scholar-athlete, you are driven to excel in the athletic arena as well as the classroom and laboratory. The discipline, sense of accomplishment, and competitive edge that you bring to your sport resonate through every channel of your intellectual life. The desire to achieve is not confined to the boat - it's all part of the mind-body connection. Balancing scholastic, athletic, and extracurricular activities, Mount Holyoke oarswomen have been Olympic medalists, World Championship competitors, and Rhodes and Fulbright Scholars.
