2008 Field Hockey Blog - Week 2

by Mimi Henry - September 25, 2008

The first twelve days of our season have been a whirlwind. Since I last wrote, we have faced off against Simmons, Nichols, Vassar and Western New England Colleges! Our eagerness to get our season underway propelled us to a 6-0 win over Simmons, which was really exciting because it was our first game. Unfortunately, our first win was followed by our first loss, to Nichols, although we put ourselves back on the map with a 4-1 win over Vassar last Saturday. A bunch of parents made the three-hour trip as well, and we celebrated after the game with lots of homemade food, including BLTs, two kinds of brownies and apple pie.

Last Friday, we took a team trip to the Big E, a huge annual fair held in Springfield, Mass. One of our first-year players, Tricia, is from the Springfield area and knew where all the good food spots were, and we happily munched on caramel apples, kettle corn and fried dough with powdered sugar. The rides were definitely the best part, although I’m not sure fried dough and roller coasters are a great combination. It was great to do something as a team that was unrelated to field hockey. Even Coach Whitcomb came with her family!

Field Hockey Fun

Tuesday afternoon, we traveled to Western New England College, where we snagged a 4-0 win. It definitely felt good for our goalkeepers to have another shutout. Afterwards, Coach took the team out to dinner and surprised us by announcing that we would not have practice on Wednesday. Lucky for us, Wednesday was Mountain Day at Mount Holyoke, an annual fall event where the President cancels classes and the whole school is invited to climb Mount Holyoke. Needless to say, the day off was a welcome break from our busy class and athletics schedule, but we are really pumped to get back on the field this Saturday and beat Wheaton!
